Vinyl Signs

The concept of cutting self adhesive, vinyl material has been around for a long time. Usually, vinyl sign makers would simply draw a pattern of what they wanted right on the vinyl and then cut it out with a razor knife. This was a time consuming and usually very expensive prospect resulting in no chance of ever replicating the exact same sign twice. With the advent of the computer and with today's demanding customer, that all changed.

Now, vinyl signs are designed almost exclusively on computers using computer aided design software also known as CAD. Once the sign is designed, it is sent to either a printing machine or a cutter/plotter, depending on the design needs. The print machine will print the design on the vinyl. This is done by using a thermal process of heating resin color right into the vinyl. Then the vinyl is transferred to the cutter/plotter to have the design cut to it's specifications. The cutter/plotter is equipped with a knife custom made for vinyl cutting. This machine can also be equipped with a special pen for plotting the design on paper. If the designed sign does not require printing, the vinyl is loaded directly into the cutter/plotter to be cut.

Using the computer for design and the precision of the print machine and/or cutter/plotter, amazing results and detail can be obtained. Now designers using techniques such as multi color overlays, gradient striping, stippling and printing (i.e. multi-colors & fades etc.) can produce amazing results and duplicate signs are virtually exact clones of each other!

Computer designed vinyl signs can be custom sized with no degradation of detail from very small sizes up to very large ones. The computer proportionately scales the sign and then prints or cuts it EXACT on the printer or cutter. Compared to the cost and time involved for other forms of signage, the vinyl sign is hard to beat.
